Best Places To Travel In Armenia: Haghpat

Travel Tips

One of the best places to travel in Armenia is Haghpat Monastery. This splendid monastery was built in a way that it overlooks the Debed Canyon and is considered to be the part of the canyon. It is also considered to be one of the “treasures” of this canyon.

The exact date of Haghpat monastery’s foundation is not known, however documentary evidence shows that this complex was founded in the middle of the 10th century by Saint Nishan.

This fantastic monastery is a must-see travel destination not only because it is a priceless religious monument, but also because it comprises architecturally noteworthy buildings. The Cathedral of St. Nishan is the largest church in the complex. Its central dome rests on the four grand pillars of the side walls — a unique architectural style typical to the 10th century Armenian architecture. Famous Armenian princes, queens, and saints are depicted on the outside walls of the chief temple and main monastery buildings surrounding it.

This fantastic travel destination is also well known for its clock-tower, founded in 1210 representing another noteworthy example of medieval architecture. Not far away from the main monastery buildings stands the bell tower, built in 1245. The first floor of this two-storied tower is cross shaped and the second one has a rectangular shape. The tower is crowned by a cupola that rests on several graceful columns.

Vestibules and galleries as well as special structures are also part of this travel destination, that served mainly as sepulchres for members of aristocracy. Each of these vestibules and galleries has its own unique architectural composition.

The other structures that made this place one of the best places to travel are khachkars (cross-stones), which are not only simple memorials but also are said to have a great power to heal and bring serenity to human souls.

There are many realistically depicted human figures n the khachkars. One of the most famous khachkars in this complex is Amenaprkich (All Savior), which name tells itself about the great curing ability of this holy stone.

Not only khachkars and churches make this complex an “Eden,” but also the gorgeous nature that calms your soul and body.
