Caves In Armenia: Lastiver, Anapat, Mozrov

Travel Tips

As I have already mentioned in my previous post, it is not easy to reach the Lastiver cave. Such tours are real adventure vacations, and they require strength and patience. Many hiking adventures are waiting for you in the Lastiver cave.

In order to reach this cave, you should begin your trip from a high hill called Gomer (or Isharats). Then you go through a forest, which is rich with wild fruit trees and bushes. At the height of about a mile you will face one of the impassable parts of the gorge called Ishadzor (it is translated as Donkey’s Gorge, as once a donkey carrying a heavy load fell down from there).

Though the path leading to this travel destination is really hard, hikers forget all the difficulties they faced when they see the beauty of Lastiver.

It is already a year that the Lastiver cave is open for tourists, due to the investments of the Moscow-based Armenian doctor.

Another cave worth visiting in Armenia is Anapat. It is located deep in the Yenokavan gorge. The Anapat cave is mostly interesting for its pre-Christian carvings. There is a huge face with three other faces around it at the entrance of the cave. It is believed that they are guarding the cave while one of them is always watching (the other three have holes instead of their eyes). There are also crosses and altars carved on the walls of this cave.

These caves aren’t just an interesting travel destination for tourists from all over the world. Scientists also show a great interest in them, since there is still much to examine and to discover there.

Excavations are carried out also at Noravank caves, especially in the Mozrov cave. The Mozrov cave is located in the Armenian province of Vayots Dzor. It is the most beautiful cave in the area. The Mozrov cave was discovered in 1965 at the depth of 1000 feet. The cave consists of four halls and is especially dangerous for people suffering from claustrophobia. The main problem is that the passages from one hall to another are narrower and narrower, and you have to crawl to pass through them.

You can find more information about the Mozrov cave in my next post.
