Debed Canyon is one of the most beautiful and unique travel destination in Armenia. This Canyon hides more “cultural treasures” in its history than any other place in Armenia. You can meet churches, chapels and khatchkars (cross stones) that are thousand years old.
I will tell you about two “treasures” that are not only the heritage of the Armenian people but are also included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
I am speaking about the two ancient and wonderful monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat, perched above the canyon, which are, for sure, among the best places to travel, if you really value the priceless heritages of the world.
These two buildings are equally beautiful and share similar architectural elements, however each of them has its mystery and unique history. One thing is clear — they were both meant to astonish and impress and never leave the minds of all those who had a chance to admire their beauty.
Let’s start from our first travel destination Sanahin, which can be translated as “this one is older than that one,” meaning that Sanahin is older than Haghpat.
Sanahin dates back to the 10th century and Armenian Manuscripts of the same century mention that this fantastic structure, which is also one of the best places to travel, was built over the ruins of the 4th or 5th century church. Sanahin comprises several buildings: three churches, two chapels, an academy, a library and a bell tower and all these buildings are surrounded by a firm wall. In the center of this magnificent complex one can find the church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) and its gavit. This church is famous for its original squints and sculptured animals that give it a kind of mystical atmosphere. Next to this church stands S. Amenaprkich church that is the largest of all the three churches built in 966. Between these two building there is an academy, which has been a real educational center and where famous Armenians studied. Not far away is the library, a very interesting square shaped building with roof supported by diagonal arches.
The other beautiful building is St. Gregory chapel with a circular dome.
In this fascinating travel destination you will always discover something new, be it a small carving on the wall or an ancient khachkar (cross stone), that will take you thousands years back.
