Enjoying Dallas On A budget

Travel Tips

Dallas Texas is, without a doubt, one of the best places around for festivals. They have a festival for everything! We won’t be discussing airfares here; you can shop those on your own. However, if you’re looking for a fun destination where you won’t spend a ton of money, yet is fun for the whole family, Texas is definitely a must do. Just make sure it’s festival season during your trip there!

Only A Couple To Choose From

Here’s a sampling of what I’m referring to when I say that Texas is the festival capital of the world. They may not all take place specifically in Dallas, but hey, you’re in Texas. If you hurry, you can still make the June 10 through to 12 to the Billy the Kid Festival in San Elizario. There will be stagecoach rides, plays, historical events, presentations, and reenactments, arts and crafts, tours, carnival rides, pony rides, live music, and look alike contests.

The Western Days Festival takes place in Elgin, Texas June 21 through to 25. This event has been taking place for over 40 years. It is five fun packed days of activities for every one young and old alike. A carnival, a beauty contest, and a giant parade are just a few of the festivity’s high points. Horseshoes, arts and crafts, volleyball, softball games, live music, and good old fashioned down home cooking will take place as well. June 23 through the 26th will put you in a time slot for the Luling Watermelon Thump, with continuous live entertainment, seed spitting contest, a parade, carnival, arts and crafts and one more thing…. oh yes; watermelon!

Bandera River Fest really does it up right with a river rodeo, kayak races and more on June 25 in Bandera, Texas. Fun for all ages is an absolute guarantee. Boeme Texas is proud to show off its family affair September 2 through 4 otherwise known as the Kendall County Fair. You can tell that Bandera is serious about their family events; they have not only one (apparently that’s not enough) but two! The second is a celebration of cowboys (who doesn’t love a cowboy? Kids idolize them; men wish they could be one; and women just want to… well… you get the idea). Note that it is held from September 2 through the fourth.

There’s Always A coupon

Sure enough, there’s even a coupon for doing Dallas. Livingsocial.com has coupons for restaurants, events, spa treatments and more for the Dallas area. Don’t forget to go online before you head out, so that you will be armed with your coupon caddy. Never leave home without it. There are also online coupon codes for Travelocity that helps during your Dallas vacation. I personally like Travelocity because of the many coupons they post online.

The Locals Know Best

Ask any local in Dallas and they can tell you that the best five or 4 stars, but inexpensive, places to eat are The Burger House on Hillcrest Avenue and Patrizio on Highland Park Village. With eight different locations in Dallas, the Tin Star Southwest Grill is bound to be near where you’re staying. This is a must stop for family eating. They have specials for kids; those under 12 eat free of charge with a paid adult on Sunday and Wednesday nights after 4:00. Now that you found a nice, fun place to eat on your budget that the kids really enjoyed, it’s time for you to get out and have a little fun.

In Deep Elum, there is a place called Monica’s where you can enjoy really cheap margaritas, and no, that’s not the tiny ones, for a fraction of their regular price. Things may have changed a bit, but last I heard they were 75¢ each, while the normal price being $3.00. The only stipulations are that you need to drink three of them (you should have no problem there), and purchase an entrée (something to soak up all that alcohol) which is not a bad deal. Since you’re going to have to rest at some point, you’ll need a place to stay. La Quinta Dallas City Place just off the North Central Expressway gets 4 out of 5 stars and can be booked right through La Quinta. Super Inn 7 Hotel on the Thornton Freeway is another place to rest your weary head, for less. Okay so we have you eating and sleeping. On a budget, what can you do with the rest of your day?

Dallas’ Favorite Budget Attractions

On Flora Street in Dallas, you will find the Nasher Sculpture Center, rated 4 out of 5 stars; the Dallas Botanical Gardens on Garland Road gets five stars; and Dallas has a Museum of Art that is quite a good deal to see if you are on or around Harwood Street. If you’re looking for more of a beach setting, you can always spend the day at White Rock Lake. There’s nothing like a day at the lake to remind you of nature’s most beautiful yet inexpensive wonders.
