Cycling is a great way to get out and explore the countryside and you can move at a pace that will keep the kids entertained and allow you to relax at the same time! There are heaps of fabulous trails in Cornwall just calling out to be cycled! From the famous Camel trail to the less well known spots, we are here to give you the info you need to get out there are get enjoying the fabulous cycling that is on offer…
Camel Trail
The most famous of all Cornwall’s cycling routes, it is no surprise why once you’ve seen it. The trail is mostly on even ground making it perfect for all ages and takes you through some beautiful Cornish nature, which is hard to parallel. The trail is approximately 17 miles in length, taking you from Padstow all the way to Bodmin. And it’s useful to know many great bike hire shops operate from the start of the trail if you didn’t bring you own.
Tehidy Trail
Great for little ones as this trail is just a short stretch of just 2.5 miles. It’s great for big ones too as there’s lots of lovely stuff to see on route! The trail takes you from the East Lodge at Tehidy Country Park and leads you through the estate, which once belonged to Sir Francis Basset of mining wealth. The good news is that it’s really easy to link up with other routes if you want to go further too, just select whatever is suitable for your family.
The Great Flat Lode Trail
The Great Flat Lode Trail is a 7.5 mile circular trail that will take you through the heart of Cornwall’s mining past. This is a great route for families, although mountain bikes are advisable, as it can get a little bit bumpy in places. If you can get the kids interested and take a short detour on foot to the top of Carn Brea hill you will be rewarded with fabulous views of the Atlantic north coast and have a chance to walk slopes where remains of Neolithic and Iron ages occupation have been found
Coast-to-Coast Trail
The kids will love it when you tell to them that you can all cycle from one side of England to the other in just a few hours and be even more excited when you do it! This fun trail leads from Portreath on Cornwall’s north Atlantic coast to Devoran on the South Coast, in Restronguet creek, which is officially the English Channel. The trail is 11 miles and takes you through some of Cornwall’s most famous mining districts, so the whole family can have a history lesson in Copper mining whilst on route too!
