The top three destinations for an exotic date

Travel Tips

Imagine if you could take someone on an incredibly extravagant date – not just to a local restaurant or the cinema, but to explore a whole new country. Which one would you choose?

There are a few obvious choices that leap out – France, for example, or Italy. But rather than hitting the clichés, I thought I’d explore a few alternative countries and their dating potential.

Japan

If you wanted to blow the mind of your date with a culture completely at odds to that of the West, take them to Japan. Unlike some countries that also produce this sought-after ‘wow’ effect, Japan has few disadvantages when it comes to living standards and comfort. Language is probably the biggest barrier you’ll face here.

For your Japanese date, there would be a wide and extremely diverse platter of food to choose from. This would range from sushi to dim sum to tampora and many other dishes. But these would be worlds away from their Western equivalents in Japan itself. To drink, beer is very popular here, but you could try the classic sake or a Japanese whisky.

In terms of stunning views and romantic places to stay, Japan has mountains, beaches and many other kinds of terrain to pick from. Okinawa has particularly breath-taking beaches – but be careful not to go during the typhoon season in August – October.

Iceland

Whisk away your loved one to Iceland for a very unique and memorable date. This island, the 18th largest in the world, is a hotspot for geothermal activity, meaning there is plenty to do and see.

Land features include lava, volcanoes, glaciers and the original ‘Geysir’ where every other geyser got its name. Bathe in hot natural pools, gaze on the northern lights and visit the Reykjavik, the city of dreamers.

For food there is an emphasis here on seafood and lamb, often in soups and hearty broths befitting the colder climate. Brennivin, also known as ‘Black Death’, is a traditional Icelandic spirit made from potatoes, which will certainly warm you up if you’re brave enough to try it!

Jamaica

Jamaica has never been as fascinating as it is right now, for just weeks ago the world watched three Jamaican runners take all three 100m medals at the London 2012 Olympic games as well as the relay and 200m. But the country has many more wonders other than Usain Bolt.

Famous for its relaxed atmosphere and wonderful music, this will certainly be a chilled out date. There is loads to explore here and many adventures to be found, including diving and walking along gorgeous beaches such as Treasure Beach.

For food, try some famed jerk chicken, perhaps accompanied by a few fruity rum cocktails. Jamaica is also famous for its coffee, the Blue Mountains producing some of the best in the world.

It’s important to find singles who share your values, beliefs and hopes for the future. Travelling to a country together can really help you determine whether you’re right for each other. Try any one of these three countries for a voyage of romantic discovery.
