Summer might have only just finished, but I for one am already dreaming about next year’s getaway! There’s something about not having to follow a strict schedule and soaking up the sun that just melts away all my usual stresses and strains.
I’ve been looking at the best cruises for 2024 and found quite a few that I’d love to go on. I’ve certainly been daydreaming about lazing underneath the sun on deck or in the swimming pool, before hopping off the ship when it docks to explore a destination I’ve never been to before. Cruising is also perfect for island hopping, and let’s face it, these places often boast the best beaches and scenery.
With this in mind, I’ve compiled a list of the top three cruises I think are standouts for next year.
1. Limassol, Cyprus
Cyprus: a lovely island that has amazing beaches, crystal clear waters and a fascinating history that includes lots of Greek mythology. Limassol is said to be where the Greek goddess of love Aphrodite was born, while it has also acted as a residence for the Byzantines and Crusaders.
As you might expect, there are lots of historical sites to keep you occupied. Even the most ardent of culture vultures will be kept busy for hours on a cruise that departs from Cyprus, with one excursion that looks particularly good including Apollo’s temple, Kolossi Castle and a wine museum. The Temple of Apollo is the most important and largest religious hub on the island, so I definitely think it’s worth a visit.
The wine museum also looks interesting, and I didn’t realise the beverage has been produced on the island for around 7,500 years. Make sure you sample a glass or two before you leave so you can really appreciate everything your tour guide tells you!
2. Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
I’ve never been to Egypt, but I can imagine that due to the Red Sea and the River Nile cruising is a popular option. I’d most definitely get a suntan here, as well as get the chance to delve underneath the waves. The country is a haven for scuba diving enthusiasts thanks to its amazing coral reefs.
If you’d rather stay a little closer to the surface of the water, wind and kite surfing are fantastic to try, while people of all ages can go snorkelling. Of course, Egypt is rich in history and culture, so make sure you explore some of Sharm El Sheikh’s leading tourist attractions.
Go for a camel ride in the desert, get closer to Mount Sinai and try your luck at haggling in one of its atmospheric markets in the old quarter.
3. La Valletta, Malta
Malta is somewhere else I’d really like to go. Its small size appeals to me, as well as the beautiful scenery that pops up whenever I search for photos of it. The port of La Valletta is steeped in history – 7,000 years of it, to be exact.
It also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you know there’s plenty to see and do here. In addition, you can go on an excursion to Comino Island, which is the smallest landmass in the Maltese group. With just seven residents, you won’t struggle to find a secluded spot on one of the many bays and coves!
